We use laboratory evolution experiments with bacteria, fungi and enzymes to understand the causes and constraints of evolution. Collaborations with theoreticians, chemists and engineers provide us with the models and tools to quantify the predictability of evolution and its determinants. But we also collaborate with people in the medical and veterinary field to seek for solutions to control unwanted evolutionary processes, such as the evolution of antibiotic resistance. These are the main themes we currently work on:

  • Empirical fitness landscapes
  • Dynamics and repeatability of evolution
  • Eco-evolutionary feedback
